Here at Puffin Book Club we're huge fans of Jacqueline Wilson so we were very excited to interview her about her new book!
1. The main character in your newest novel is called Sapphire Battersea. How did you think up her name?
Sapphire Battersea is the second book about my favourite character Hetty Feather, who is a Victorian foundling. In this book Hetty determinedly renames herself. She knows now her long-lost mother once considered calling her Sapphire because of her blue eyes ? and Hetty has adopted her mother's surname too.
2. How would you describe Sapphire Battersea/Hetty Feather?
Hetty is an ultra imaginative passionate girl with a fiery spirit and ideas above her station.
3. Can you give us any clues about what will happen to Sapphire in the next book in the saga?
I've just started writing the third story about Hetty/Sapphire ? and I'm still busy finding out myself!
4. What is your favourite children's book?
I think I probably like Ballet Shoes by Noel Streatfeild most of all. I've read it at least ten times.
5. Who is your favourite children's author?
Edith Nesbit is another favourite author ? I especially like Five Children and It and The Railway Children.
6. What is the most exciting adventure that you've ever been on?
I think leaving home at the age of 17 to go and work on a magazine in Scotland was quite an adventure.
7. Do you have any writing tips for our readers?
I think it's a good idea to read lots, to enrich your imagination and increase your vocabulary ? and to keep a diary to get into a regular writing habit.
