"Brilliantly Imagined Fantasy"
-
Mark and Lily's search for the truth has meant exile from Agora, and now they face the hostile lands outside the city walls. But feisty Lily is suddenly uncertain, while Mark is angry that Lily accepted the Director of Agora's terms; his release from prison only if he helps Lily to discover the meaning of the mysterious Midnight Charter. Now there's no way back, and the dark haunted forest looms. Terror, tragedy and unexpected rescue bring the pair into the land if Giseth. To their amazement the Gisethi will accept no payment in return for their help - an unknown concept to the Agora-born. To Lily, Giseth seems a perfect land, and she passionately believes that the secret of their entwined destiny lies here. But Mark is deeply suspicious. In his bitter experience everything, even paradise, has its price.
Whitley's characters, always interesting, develop into complex human beings and friendship is tested as the reasons for Mark's unease emerge. Themes of lies and truth, loss, abandonment and reconciliation are a central thread but the adventure whirls along and excitement builds as Lily and Mark battle demons; but are they real, or imaginary?
